Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. My favorite project this semester was the landscape painting. Painting is probably one of my favorite types of art. Blending the colors was really cool because you can make so many different colors by only using primary colors to start off with. This is probably my most successful project because I have had experience in the past with paint so it wasn't completely new to me. My colors blended pretty well which was a huge success for me. It is probably my neatest project and neatness is a big factor in making a good project. My trees in this painting was a success because of the blending of the greens. Although you cannot erase paint when you mess up, there are still ways that you can fix a mistake. I had to repaint a lot of my mistakes which is not a big deal because you don't have to completely start all over. Overall, my colors, blendings, and overall scene made this project my favorite and most successful.

2. The value portrait is the project I developed, learned, and grew from the most. Although it didn't turn out the best, it is way better than what I could do before this class. Before this class, I would draw someone with just shapes and lines. In this part of the class, I learned that their is a lot more to it than just lines and shapes. You have to add a lot of shading and value to get the turnout you want. The lighting also effects the way features on people look which is what gives the portrait a realistic look. By using a colored pencil lightly, you can make out where the light hits. I always wondered how people could draw pictures of people that look exactly like them so easily and now I know how. I learned a lot about details and how you have to start off with just the minor details and go into the major details later on. I think that if I were to draw a portrait of somebody now, I would be a lot better at it because of what I learned and practiced during this unit.

3. The game board drawing is a piece that I have used techniques from previous projects. In elementary school art, I remember being taught how to draw a perspective highway. Since I was in elementary school, I was obviously not the best artist but I still remembered a few skills from drawing in perspective. My skills have grown since then because I only knew how to draw from a one perspective, but now I can draw from a bunch of different perspectives. Before, I only knew basic things about perspectives like parallel lines, but now I know that there is a lot more too it than just lines. You need to use vanishing points to make sure everything is lined up and neat and different sized shapes in order to make things look farther or closer up. I tried creating my vanishing point so that the board is in a perspective of looking down at it from a right angle. I made my pieces on the chessboard somewhat smaller to create an effect that they were further away than the other pieces. I never would have thought about shadows if we were not taught it and now that we have been taught it I realize that shadows make a big difference in how things look. By making shadows for the pieces, they actually look like they are standing up. This unit has taught me a lot of new vocabulary and more in depth things about making perspective drawings.

4.I feel that the stencil of a landmark was least important. Although it was fun, I didn't really learn much from it. I have used paper mache type stuff in the past and it isn't really difficult. The only thing I really learned from this was that you have to be careful when spray painting because you only have one chance to spray it on. Luckily, mine didn't come out too bad. I think that the cutting of magazines took a lot of wasted time because it took me so long just to find a magazine picture that fitted my theme of the background. Cutting out the stencil took a lot of time as well because I had to cut every little square out and it got frustrating at times. The positive and negative space was one thing I already learned and it isn't a very interesting thing to learn in art, in my opinion. I only had to use it to figure out what I wanted black, and what I wanted white. This project overall took a lot of time, it didn't teach me a lot, and didn't turn out as well as I had hoped.

5. This project overall reflects me as an artist because I got to use one of my favorite animals, an owl. I think forests are really pretty and are a cool thing to see, so that was shown in my clay tile. Clay is my second favorite form of art so that shows a side of me as well. I love 3D because it makes things seem realistic. A personal connection is that when I was little, I used to go camping a lot and I enjoyed watching and hearing birds in the wilderness. My tile reminds me of a wintery scene because when I see those types of leaves and owls it reminds me of winter. Winter is one of my favorite seasons which is another reason why I chose to do this. Overall, this tile shows a lot about my favorite animals, seasons, and the colors and 3D effects show who I am as a person.
