Value Portraits Art Critique
Self evaluation (must write at least 3 sentences for each question)
1. Explain the process you went through to develop your drawing.
I used tracing paper and sketched the values and shades of a portrait of a girl in my class. Then, I colored the whole back of the tracing paper with the led of my pencil. I then put it in my sketchbook, picture side up, and reshaded over the spots I did to make it show up in the sketchbook. By shading the back of the tracing paper with led, the portrait shades were able to show up in the sketchbook.
2. Explain how you found the different values in the portrait?
I found the different values in the portrait by seeing which spots on her face were darkest. I shaded the darkest spots onto the tracing paper. I looked for the values in the face and hair and found a lot.
3. Did you achieve a full range of the different values within your portrait? How?
Yes, I did achieve a full range of the different values within my portrait. There was a lot of darker spots in the hair. In the face, the closer you got to the face features, the darker it got. The farther away you got from the features, the lighter it was.
4. Describe your craftsmanship. Is the artwork executed and crafted neatly?
My craftsmanship is kind of neat. It was hard to do the hair because she has a lot of curls and it was very detailed. The hair was probably the least neatest part. The face was somewhat clean and neat, more than the hair.
5. List any obstacles you had to overcome and how you dealt with them.
Like I said in question 4, I had to overcome the hair difficulty. I had to erase many times but was able to figure out the values as best as I could. The way I shaded was difficult. Instead of starting very lightly with my pencil, I started kind of dark which caused problems. I erased a few times and made sure to start out again very lightly.
